Team Studies with the Community-based Early Detection Program (EDP)

An example of Dr. McCoy and his research team's involvement in community-based projects is demonstrated in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Community-Based Early Detection Program for breast cancer. In an attempt to surmount some of the barriers to early detection of breast cancer among women of low socioeconomic status in Dade County, a cancer Early Detection Program (EDP) was initiated in 1987 by the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) at the University of  Miami School of Medicine. The EDP targeted low income, minority women who otherwise would not receive a mammogram. This program has been instituted as usual care by the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, and is responsible for the development of the one-stop Taylor Breast Cancer  Clinic.
