National Collaborations
Over the years, the CDRC has collaborated with more than 25 other universities, including Johns Hopkins University, University of California at San Francisco, University of Colorado, University of Chicago, Harvard University and Brandeis University. Within Florida, CDRC has strong ties with two sister institutions: Florida International University and Florida State University. A Memorandum of Understanding between Florida State University, a flagship in the state university system and UM was forged to provide a creative and synergistic partnership developed to meet challenges of the future. The agreement commends existing collaborations, encourages interdisciplinary collaborations, and provides procedures for both institutions to benefit from joint research funding.
Investigators from the center’s sister state university, Florida International University (FIU) participate actively with University of Miami researchers and are utilizing the infrastructure that has been established by both universities to carry out inter-university collaborative research in South Florida. This cooperation is facilitated by a 12-year affiliation agreement between FIU’s Department of Public Health and UM’s Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, allowing the exchange of students and teachers, research collaboration, and sharing of state funds.
In addition, the CDRC serves as a resource center and mentoring agent for smaller universities and colleges that are, by themselves, unable to compete for funding to carry out drug abuse research. In particular, the CDRC has a unique relationship with Andrews University in Barrien Springs, Michigan in which researchers collaborate with CDRC researchers to accomplish research in areas other than the state of Florida.
